Looks like a big upside with William Heslam. Looks like he has only been running track a couple years, similar to Andrew Wheating pre-Oregon.

I’m going to put this one here because I’m not exactly sure when he’s coming since in his post he says “next season” it could mean a January enrollee and compete this academic year. Duck men got a commit from Spanish steepler, Sergio Del Barrio. He is the U18 European champion in the 2k steeple. He sports personal bests of: 800m - 1:51.61 1500m - 3:49.75 2k Steeple - 5:38.55 (9 seconds faster than Duck frost Balazs who led the high schoolers last year) 3000m - 8:25.84(i) www.instagram.com/reel/ClWexQHP2DH/?igshid=NGFlNTM4N2U=

I would imagine he is coming next fall as he is 17 and won’t turn 18 until February which would be the equivalent of a high school senior. Those are pretty good marks for a 17y/o. He could come into the program as a sub 1:50 and 3:45ish runner which would be right on par with his fellow Duck recruits.
The men’s team is continuing to get great middle distance recruits. However that is still one of the weaker areas on the women’s team who is also falling behind a little in the sprints as well. But the recruiting season is still very early so I won’t get too worried.

This is what Sergio Del Barrio has to say:
I am very excited to announce that next season I will be joining the University of Oregon. I want to thank first of all my family for encouraging and supporting me in making this decision, and for everything they do for me every day. I would also like to thank all the people who have contributed in some way to making this possible. Especially my coach, my multidisciplinary group and my friends.

Mallard G. Your translation of Sergio del Barrio's post is right on. I was not aware of your Spanish language knowledge. Here is a bit more on Sergio from a Spanish post in Spain. (I do speak Spanish). Very recently he ran a Spanish indoor record (U20). His time was 2'25".15. For comparison, the USA record is by Rob Andrews 2:22.28. Reinhardt Harrison has a 2:23.46. Both Andrews and Harrison did it on a 200m track I think. Del Barrio did it on a track of 180m. Ya tengo ganas de ver otro espanol correr en Eugene.

Nice recruit for the UO men! That steeplechase time is fantastic for a runner of his age, and he could project as a 1500m runner as well. 3:45 is what AJ Acosta and Mac Fleet were running at a similar age -- obviously a different time, but I'm excited to see this kid in a UO shirt.

Coach Shalane has picked up another decent recruit in Californian Allura Markow. She has PRs of 1600/4:50 and 800/2:16 both set in her Junior Year last season. She was 8th two weeks ago it in the California State XC meet. Could be a recruit that could develop into a valuable contributor in a few years especially if she is young in running age. http://instagram.com/p/Cl6U3N8LFQA

Markow has been running throughout HS; in fact, she was 8th at the Cal D3 XC champs as a frosh, the same as this year. Having said that, her XC season this year was clearly the best of her career, winning the Southern Section D3 race, the equivalent of a medium sized state meet in itself. She had a very active 2022 track season, running under 5:00 numerous times and finishing 10th at state in her PR; she also ran 10:50 and qualified in the 3200 but opted for the 1600 at the state meet. She doesn't appear to be a 1500-800 type and she's tiny, maybe not in the Harper McLain category but close. Without knowing anything at all about her training, I'd speculate that she's a future 5-10 type who has yet to run much volume. The present regime may see her as someone who will respond to the strength oriented training Jerry and Shalane favor. To me, she's an example of increasing the numbers in the program and thus increasing the chances that someone will develop who wasn't necessarily a HS phenom. That's not to deem her a sleeper; she finished 8th in the Cal Champs regional last weekend (think Footlocker) and will be running this coming weekend in the national championships along with her future Duck teammate Katie Clute (7th in the Midwest region). Simeon Birnbaum will also be racing, doubling back from his excellent NXN performance. Forgive the lengthy digression, Markow is another excellent pick-up for the program.

Obviously Shalane and Jerry know what they are looking for and what they are hoping to gain from the recruits. The great thing is that the high school recruits that Shalane is bringing in won't have to necessarily be a factor and can possibly redshirt next XC season giving them time to adjust and develop. Because Girard didn't run at Nationals the team that did is only losing one runner (Pivec) this year due to eligibility. The facts of adding Zarbo back into the mix, the improvements from the current female runners when they go through a full year under Jerry's program, and I would imagine there are quite a few collegiate runners who would love to be coached by Shalane while they finish out their collegiate eligibility that could come in and be top 5 scorers; I think that the current High School recruits won't need to be a factor in the fall and they can instead build up to be ready when its their time to shine in a couple of years.

Tayson Echohawk of Orem HS (UT) has committed to the University of Oregon! He chose Oregon over BYU, Northern Arizona, and Oklahoma State! Personal Bests: 800: 1:52.86 1600: 4:08.50 3200: 9:12.52 5000 (XC): 14:24.30 He placed 14th at NXN last week. He is a very solid pickup for the ducks. He actually seems like someone who does better at cross than on the track, at least based on times, so you would think he would end up at one of the other three schools that showed interest. That shows me that we are invested in cross country season moving forward. http://instagram.com/p/CmDaiN-rq-v

Yet another great pickup by Coach Shumacher. This men's mid/distance class is just phenomenal and to think that some of these runners will have even better HS PRs when the track season is done. I have a feeling that this is not the last recruit that is going to come in on the men's mid/distance side. I am sure there will be a few more Oregon locals added as well. We need some sprinters/jumpers on both genders and also some 800 runners on the Women's side.

We need some sprinters/jumpers on both genders and also some 800 runners on the Women's side. I expect fewer jumpers with Coach Henson splitting his time now, but I am a bit dismayed by the lack of incoming sprinters...unless that great African sprinter Tebogo is truly expected to come...

I feared that the program was going to get out of balance regarding distance and sprinting.
I am willing to accept that Phil Knight has a better plan than would I. However, I love the sprints. I realize that Eugene is an improbable location in which to build a sprint power, but we all witnessed that Oregon did.
You do get 3 sports from distance runners, and only two from sprinters. So this means that perhaps Oregon will win more national team titles, but under Johnson Oregon won multiple team titles. I loved that era’s talent.
