This kind of pick-up augers well for the future. The team should always have 5-8 state level recruits on it, of the Elmore/Thorsett variety, supplemented by national level recruits and sprinkle in a judicious mix of elite level foreign athletes. I get the sense that the new regime would like to get the numbers up, perhaps to 16-20 or so, which I think is a good idea. Maurica preferred a smaller number and then Helen inherited that, which combined with the Hayward reconstruction, Covid and her own domestic recruiting challenges, have kept the numbers down. Shalane is starting off as a magnet for recruits (lets hope it stays that way) and has a post Covid (hopefully), new Hayward environment and the presumed support of Schumacher to increase the numbers. I also get the sense that Shalane is really enjoying her initial taste of college coaching. It's the purest speculation but I could see her staying on long after Schumacher has moved on to other things (not that that's imminent; I just don't see him as a Duck lifer). But I digress. This is a good pick-up.

Could this mean a thawing of relationships between the powerhouse Summit and the University of Oregon? There has been bad blood between the McClatchie's (coaches of the distance program at Summit) and the U of O for several years. Let's hope this brings excellent coaches, Carol and Jim McClatchie, back into the fold.

Duck Men lock in the commitment of Simeon Birnbaum out of South Dakota. This is a big pickup. The Ducks keep getting them. Crater’s Gorze got away but we have had no issue getting other talented runners. Personal Bests: 800m - 1:50.12 Mile - 3:59.51 3200m - 8:55.22 http://instagram.com/p/CkoqxT7rPSu

Great Pickup by the Ducks and I imagine that it is a few more that will be coming through. I like that there are still an emphasis on strong miler types which will help ensure the Ducks have a great track presence and helps the back end depth for XC as long as they get some 5k/10 collegiate transfers like Beinenfeld to be low sticks in future years. There is the potential to have two big recruits in one week as Devan Kipyego has the Ducks in his final 5 (which includes Washington). Kipeyego has very similar stats as Birnbaum and will be announcing his final choice on live this coming Thursday.

I wonder if Shalane paid a visit the Devon as part of her "adventure" to the NY marathon?

Devan Kipyego is the younger brother of current Iowa State 1:47 800 Sophomore Darius Kipyego which is also included also in Devans's top 5. I would imagine they have the edge over the other schools but hopefully that isn't the case.

Thanks for sharing. Looks very capable of being a sub-3:40 1500m runner and a factor at the NCAA level in the future. That 3200m time would also indicate that Birnbaum has potential at 5K as well.

Devon Kipyego is following his brother to Iowa State. Not surprising to me that he chose ISU especially with the middle distance talent we have already signed.

Getting off the track, Coach Blu signed the U20 silver medalist, Kobe Lawrence, from Kingston, Jamaica. Since the junior men put a 6kg ball instead of the 7.26kg adult shot put it’s hard to immediately project his scoring but certainly a huge get and talented individual. http://instagram.com/p/Ckyk6yHJIt2

Lawrence is a huge get; he's the age of a college freshman now, as turns 19 in February (has me wondering if possibly he might be here this spring despite being listed in the class of 23). But last year, when he was the age of a HS senior he threw the 6K shot (about 1.2 lbs heavier than the normal HS shot) 67-9. He also made dramatic improvement in the disc, throwing the 1.75 kilo discus (slightly heavier than the 1.6k HS version) 205-7, nearly 32 feet further than he had the year prior. Further, in his only recorded mark w/the adult discus, he threw 178 and change. For some more perspective, a great HS discus thrower who throws 200 ft w/the HS version will usually throw about 165 with the senior disc at that stage, so he's already well beyond that. Given good health, he seems like an immediate impact guy and maybe an NCAA scorer sooner rather than later. By far the best shot/disc recruit we've ever had on the men's side. He's so good I'm wondering if Blutreich will maybe not put a hammer in his hand immediately but I suspect he will. Very excited about this as maybe we can be a legit throws powerhouse with both genders.

I didn’t even think to look if he competed with either of the “adult” implements at any events before and lo and behold, he has. He even place 2nd at the senior national championships this year in the shot.
Senior: Shot Put - 17.67m (58-11 1/2) Discus - 54.33m (178-3)
And to add some context to why this is such a huge get for Oregon, the top 10 outdoor shot put list hasn’t had a change to it since 1986. Similarly, the discus list hadn’t had a change since 1988 other than Hunter-Sims who threw the 7th best throw in 2017. We have some really far marks in these two events but almost no big marks since I was born.

Roosevelt earns another Duck with Wiliaml Heslam. During his Junior Year he ran PRs of: 800/1:53 and 1500/3:51. He is the first in-state commit for the men's Distance crew. There are a few pretty good in state recruits left out there to nab like Alexander Garcia-Silver and Jacob Nenow amongst others.
