There is a new webpage from Oregon about the tower ... hayward.uoregon.edu/towerLot's of information here so go look... Here is a sample Reminds me of the thread we had here about the Oregon GOATs... And the people on this list was all at the top of all of our lists. The twitterverse is already debating who should be added. Raevyn is pretty stoked.

Wow. Another positive story adding to the recognition of legends that will grace the new Hayward Field. Each day, as the stadium nears its completion, I am so thankful to be here to witness the unfolding of this astounding structure that cements Eugene and Hayward Field as the home of the sport of Track and Field in the U.S.

The unnamed athlete should/could be Phil Knight!

Can't argue with the five chosen but man that sure leaves a lot of greats out! King Ches, Prandini, Joaquim Cruz, Centro, English Gardiner and on and on....... Would have been nice to have at least one of our great foreign athletes recognized too.

Would have been nice to have at least one of our great foreign athletes recognized too. They plan on having displays throughout the stadium and museum honoring many other Oregon athletes...

I’d support a Ring of Honor ala the Cowboys, which could be placed on the fascia of the second deck. Automatic entry to anyone who scored 25 or more NCAA points, or set an AR as a Duck. While such a plan might initially include more male athletes, this would change over upcoming decades. One of the super cool things at A&M is giant banners featuring school record holders; such an idea might also be considered at Hayward.....maybe along the trackside wall? What an incentive for incoming Ducks with the ultimate goal being to get one of those slots

And speaking of the tower... it looks like one of the panels plays homage to the old east grandstand.

Or maybe the new logo of the Organ Ducks (men's teams).
Did the Tower of Pisa, Coit's Tower and other such tall slender structures go through such base (albeit clever and funny) ridicule when they were designed and constructed (very well could have)? Or is it just the age we live in? I doubt the design was intended be what the ridicule suggests it is (if it was deliberate whomever did it should be ashamed of themselves). Perhaps insensitive and stupid, especially for a publicly owned structure. But, alas, such is the nature of the species.

I think it's been the nature of the species for awhile. At the entrance to the USC campus there's a phallic-like symbol that was built over 100 years ago and was certainly getting its share of jokes in the late '60s when it was over 50 years old. Then there's this: Grover's Guide to Campus Phallic Symbols which lists several dozen such, um, "objects". Guess Grover will now have to update his list.

I remember entering a bridge (Nhat Tan Bridge) crossing the river in Hanoi and learning that the given name was Penis Bridge....appropriate for the design. As for the Oregon Tower...is no surprise that the Eugene Weakly would publish such a list of crude names. Who here reads the Eugene Weakly, other than Bruce? (LOL).

Actually, I got some of the names from TFN and a forum member's reference to the EW. I used to occasionally pick it up when eating lunch alone or waiting in a Doctor's office, but we have cell phones now with which to entertain ourselves and 30 out of 36 pages advertising cannabis retailers doesn't make for interesting reading the few times a year I still peruse the paper (though I do like the Savage Love column, much like I still read Dear Abby). I haven't been able to find any EW racks in Montevideo or Buenos Aires these past weeks.

Bruce, I hope you didn't take me wrong...the Weakly ends up at our house at times. I pick it up at Market of Choice and my wife seems to enjoy scanning it. BTW, it's ironic that just last night I was talking about Uruguay and Argentina with a good friend. He highly recommends getting to the Iguazu Falls, if you have not already done so. Recommends staying at the Sheraton, which is within the Park itself, eliminating paying the entrance fees each day.

Oh, no, Mallardg....I got the joke regarding EW. Returned from my second visit to Iguazu about a week ago, since my wife hadn't seen it yet; the Sheraton is nice, but the entry fee is only $13 and as beautiful as the Argentinian side is, a day is more than enough to hike the entire park (we did), which is only about 10km total. Seeing Iguazu is like seeing St Peter's; nothing else similar in the world and I've seen Victoria and Niagra (but not Angel, given the situation in Venezuela).
