I've always been a little confused as to which year is being referenced in the recruit threads so am using the school years involved as a heading for this thread to monitor the next batch of prospects. What brought this to mind was discovering a junior teammate of Harley Daniels at Oregon City, Sophia Beckmon (And yes, I'm sure many of you are already aware of her.) She's best known as the state record holder in the LJ at 19-11, a distance she's approached on numerous occasions, so not a one-off. She also won the national meet at Hayward last summer with 19-10ish as a soph. In addition, she's run 11.83/24.17 already this year. Further, she's still only 16 and already stands 5'11." I really hope the staff has been busy establishing that relationship. Her athletic.net page: www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=11490783&L=0 Here's a great pic of her with Lily Jones and Mia Brahe-Pedersen, where you can see her stature. www.oregonlive.com/highschoolsports/2022/05/girls-track-oregon-citys-sophia-beckmon-is-chasing-new-records-and-a-return-to-hayward-field.htmlShe's obviously a top jump prospect but with that size hard not to wonder about her heptathlon potential. In any case, would love to see her in Duck gear.

Jedg, we are putting the year that they would join the track team so any Seniors would get added to the 2023 Recruits thread. Juniors can’t commit yet so no thread but they’ll be 2024 and Sophomores will actually be in a 2025 thread.

Yes, but cross country runners compete in the fall, so present hs juniors would compete in the fall of 23, thus the thread title.

I do not disagree with this statement ^^^ Just letting you know the method behind the madness. This assumes there is a method behind the madness LOL. There are no hard and fast rules here, but I would entertain ideas to make it easier for all to find the right thread for the discussion of recruits. I want everyone to be able to find what they want easily without imposing needless rules which, I admit, may result in some messiness. The thing I want to avoid is having a separate board for recruiting because I think we all appreciate seeing every new post on just one page. It also is a good idea to limit the recruiting thread to just one year, else it will get to be too long. So for now I will pin this thread to the top to begin discussion of the next batch of recruits. But because there are no fast rules, people can in fact post in any of the recruiting threads and can even start a new thread to discuss a particular recruit. But, again, I'm open to suggestions. I know some people would like to have a list of potential and committed recruits for each year, but maintaining such lists requires a resource commitment beyond my current level of knowledge and time. If anyone want to fill this void, your efforts would be highly appreciated.

Whatever works for you, Bill. I realize that, even though I haven't coached for a long time, I organize my thinking along the academic year, so for me it's when this year's junior recruits are going to appear as Ducks 2023-2024. This year's senior recruits are already in the 2022 thread (and they will be wearing Duck colors in 2022-2023, depending on their event). Anyway, I'm sure it will all work out ("But how?" "I don't know, it's a mystery." Name the movie)

I believe that Sophia broke the state long jump record today and also accomplished her #1 wish. She won the event by spanning more than 20 feet. I read where her best was 20'1.5". Nice job.

Since the Oregon State Meet has concluded I have decided to compile a list of potential in state recruits from this year's high school Junior class. Solid class of in state talent that could be beneficial to the Ducks in the long run. Will be interesting to see which of the athletes will become future Ducks over the next year. I would bet there were be a few:
Girls: Sophia Beckmon - For obvious reasons as state above
Lakely Doht-Barron - Ran prs of 55.99/400m and 24.58/200m this past weekend at the state meet. From her sophomore season to this year she knocked over 3.5 seconds off her 400 time and over a second off the 200. While her times aren't national class in either event she obviously has some upside in her and could add some depth in the 4x400 and conference meet in future years.
Kaia Schmidt - 2:13/800 pr finished 3rd in the 6A class yesterday just slightly off her pr. Dropped over 10 seconds in the 800 from sophomore to junior year. Believe she is already being looked at.
Ella Thotsett - 4:33/1500 and 9:47/3k with solid XC results. Could be a decent 5k/10k runner in college.
Olivia Allen - South Eugue runner who was runner up to Harley Daniel in both Hurdle races setting prs of 14.93/100H and 43.57/300H along the way. While that won't be raising any eyebrows for the Duck coaching staff it was was her 55.67 4x4 anchor leg split at the state meet that caught my eye. I am sure her hurdling would improve quite a bit in the right College setting and she could definitely be a Pac-12 conference scorer in the 400H and add more depth in the 4x400 as well for the Ducks. With her being in South Eugene I would imagine the Ducks are of high interest to her.
Kyeese Hollands - Seemingly decent Discuss and Javelin thrower having thrown 150-1/disc and 149-8/Jav.
Jordon Koskondy - Won the 5A class 100/12.49; 100H/14.65; 300H/44.04; and Shot/43.3. I saw that and thought to myself she can be a multi-eventer and sure enough she has competed in the Hep before most recently back in Nov scoring 4025 and has since improved many of her open events this Spring. I would imagine she would compete in the Outdoor Nationals Hep next month.
Anika Sukumar - Triple Jump 40-0/18-3.25 LJ. With Lexi Ellis only having one more year left there will be a need to fill her spot. She could be a conference scorer in the TJ in a couple of years.
Boys: Andrew Walker - Has already taken a recruiting visit for Oregon Football and has said that the Track team spoke to him after his 200 performance at Oregon relays where he set his PR of 21.27. He completed the 100/200 double win this past weekend at the state meet. His form is very much the football type so there is a lot more there on the track side if he is able to spend some serious time getting technically sound. There must be a serious attempt going on right now between the Football and Track Coaches at Oregon to figure out a path for these football/track sprinters. Will be interesting to see how this plays out with the Freshman sprinters next year who fall in this category but until then I won't put too much energy into him as Football seems to be his priority just like the others.
William Heslam - 1:53/800 and 4:11/mile. Finished second in the 1500 at the state meet running 3:51.13pr which converts to about a 4:09 mile. Could fit into Coach Thomas' 800/1500 group in a few years.
Jacob Neow - 8:16/3K; 4:15/mile, and very solid XC results. Probably a future 5k/10k runner.
Tyrone Gorze - 8:11/3K; 4:08/mile and very solid XC results as well. Also seemingly a future 5k/10 runner in the making.
Austin Milton - 201-4/JT Finished 2nd at Outdoor Nationals last year and 3rd at States this year.

Great list, NateB - thanks. Some interesting looking distance prospects on the mens side and Milton looks to be a very good javelin prospect. And Beckmon and Sukumar look like legit LJ and TJ prospects, respectively.

Beckmon repeated as champ at Nike nationals with a huge legal PR, 6.30 (20-8). Very impressive.

First big announcement for 2023-2024 recruits. Portland naitive Kate Peters who had previously announced her commitment to Oklahoma State back in early June has instead committed to Oregon to be Coached by Shalane who I believed had been working with Kate while in Portland. She is one of the best distance runners in High School right now and is the first American female distance recruit of this magnitude signing to the Ducks since Kate Murphy. I think that is what many of the concerns had been on this board about Coach Helen in that she wasn't able to recruit top American runners. I think this proves that something was amiss with the domestic recruiting. With Kate Peters making the shift I am sure this will be encouraging for other top female domestic distance runners to follow.

Interesting that in her post she says that Oregon was her dream school....which then begs to question why she didn't commit to Oregon initially when Coach Helen was still here? Its not like Shalane was going to be coaching at Ok State.
