Yesterday the Oregon Club met for lunch at Hayward Field. After we ate, Assistant Coach Chris Solinsky answered questions for about 40 minutes. There was none of the usual "coach speech". He tried to fully and honestly answer each question with detailed responses. A couple of things he said was the effort to add more interest in scoring meets at Hayward Field. He mentioned that they tried to arrange a "Border War" quad meet between the four northwest schools (the old annual Northern Division Meets) that the Old Timers will fondly remember, but Washington turned it down. They will try again next season. They want to add more All comers Meets and looking for ideas to add more interest in their home meets. They have attended other Duck home events for ideas and welcome suggestions. He said that at first Jerry wanted to rebuild the men's team with freshman, but now realizes that they must be more aggressive at adding transfers. He said they would be very busy this year doing that. He said that Shalane has been dong that with the women's team and intend to even more aggressive in recruiting quality transfers. He said that the women have a high quality all around team and admitted the men have a way to go, but their indent is to do the same with the men.
We then took an hour tour starting with the underground areas below the west and south portions of the stadium. The 3 pictures below show 2 warm up/practice tracks made with the same exact surface as the outdoor track. Both the 2 lane shorter track and 6 lane longer track have places marked for placement of the 100 meter hurdles for women and 110 meter hurdles for men. I estimated the length of the longer track to be 120 meters so they could do a full 110 Hurdle race. Both track could be used at the same time. Both without hurdles or both with hurdles. One portion could have shorter hurdles for the women and the other portion high hurdles or the men. I will add another post on the facilities for the field event athletes and then a third post on the view from the tower. I also took pictures of the museum, but since that is open to the public, I think most of you have seen that area.
ENJOY!!!
