Oddly, the crowd wasn't quite as large today despite a respectable pro line up. It seems that only parents and grandparents show up to watch their kids and then leave once the kids' events are over. Duck families keep asking who's your kid? My answer? "All of 'em". The announcing was atrocious today, with the announcer mixing up 4x200 with 4x400 relays and not once announcing the names of individual runners. Some thoughts:
1) Did anyone notice that Deajah Stevens became part of an AR in the 4x200? OK, it's a funky indoor event, but still. I have no idea who the other members were, nor did the announcer.
2) From goat to GOAT. My highlight was Mick Stanovsek's 3:57.9. You should have seen the look on his face when he saw the time. According to his parents, this was a FOUR SECOND PR, thus putting his mediocre 800 DMR leg in the rear view mirror. This kid is a 1500/miler now, with the best time of the year on the mile squad.
3) So what now for the DMR? Stanovsek can't be expected to do a Ches and run a mile heat, a DMR leg and a mile final at A&M. So step up, Jaxson Hoey, who PRed today with a 1:52.90. While that's over a second slower than Stanovsek's DMR time yesterday, it represented a small PR for Hoey. Cam Stone ran a strong 4x400 leg today and the distance pool has a ton of good choices, not all of whom will make individual events at Nationals.
4) The men should stop wasting Stone's talents in the 4x400. That team is 10 seconds away from being competitive, so why bother?
5) While Brodey Hasty didn't achieve his goal of a sub-4 mile, a 4:03.26 in January for a HS kid sure impressed me. Can't wait to see him in a Duck singlet.
6) And in case anyone is wondering, Cooper Teare was a DNF in the 3000 for the simple reason that he acted as a pacemaker.
