So great to see the former Oregon high schoolers Elmore and Thompson really blossom this year in XC. Of course, Elmore really started her ascent last year, but now has taken the leadership role. A fully healthy and fit Kate Peters will make a very strong contingent of in-state talent next year. And I continued to be impressed by Clute - as a true Frosh, she is running just behind some big name veterans from Stanford and Washington...and Oregon!

I too have been very impressed with Clute thus far she has been solid for a true freshman. If she stays healthy she is going to be much better on the grass next year after a full training cycle. Next year's squad should have some fireworks.

So I don't know if Elliot Cook will qualify. He finished 10th and needs to be in the top 4 of the runners from non-qualifying teams and right now I see runners from Portland, Santa Clara, Gonzaga, CBU, and Cal Poly who finished ahead of Cook, so I it depends on how many of those teams qualify for the finals.

Women definitely showed up today even though Klaudia ran 7th for Oregon for the first time ever. Unfortunately, she has regressed since the pre-Nate meet. I’m curious if Nelson might be a better option to replace someone at nationals. The men’s race was exactly as I predicted a couple of months ago. Unfortunate for them since they did not run as well as they did at Pac-12s. Connor Burns had his best race as a Duck though! I’m definitely optimistic that the women’s squad will be as good as advertised. I would love a top 10 finish this year from that squad since last year they were going into nationals ranked 11th but didn’t have Girard who was having a very consistent year. The men I’m not so optimistic about. With a fully healthy team I think they have a good shot at qualifying for nationals. A few injured athletes and the whole season could take a bad turn. Last year at West regionals only 15 points separated 4th place Oregon from 7th place Portland. I would expect the top 3 in the West to remain Washington, Stanford, and Gonzaga (not in that order necessarily) so the men will be battling with CBU, Boise State, and Portland for potential at-large bids. Projected top 5: 1. Isaiah Stuery 2. Josh Edwards 3. Quincy Norman 4. Abdinasir Hussein 5. Alex Slenning 6. Cameron Stein 7. Josh Schumacher or Giuliano Scasso Caleb Brown has not improved since he got to Oregon. Will he be better this year? Will some of the young guys be ready like Aiden Smith? Can the 1500m studs like Palfrey, Cook, or Harrison make a successful leap to the 10k distance?

The women's team seems to be peaking at the right time. Disappointing end to the season for the Oregon men's team. Foolishly, I was expecting more.

Expected at large bids from the west region: Portland CBU Washington
So the depth in the west is likely getting rewarded.
