Katie Clute goes under 10 minutes in 9:50.06 which puts her 4th on the Oregon All-Time list! Not bad in her first Steeple in the Oregon singlet. Fabulous. Wasn’t that long ago we’d never had a sub 10….and she premiered with one. Wow! Actual time, as previously noted, was 9:59.06. If she can knock 10 seconds off her opener, she could be an NCAA scorer. She’ll surely at least get to Regionals with that time

Right I mistyped. 9:50.06 would have put her #2 All-time Sam McDonnell-- DNF. Injured? That's what I think of when I seed DNF in SC. My optimistic part of my brain is saying “maybe she just ran a 2000m steeple being the first steeple for her” while my pessimistic brain is wondering about injury. Did anyone watch the event and get an idea of what occurred?

Did anyone watch the event and get an idea of what occurred? She started out OK and was in contact with the lead group for the first few laps, but then faded and by the last 4 laps was lagging in last place landing on two feet in the water jump. I think she dropped out with 2 laps to go? Anyway, she is scheduled to run the 1500m on Saturday so we will see.

Nice run by Clute she looks really good and has for sure found her event. For her to have broken 10:00 in only her second attempt shows that she has a lot of potential in this event. As for McDonnell she was struggling going over the water pit and after fading each lap about halfway through had an awkward landing on one of the water pit jumps and maybe ran one more lap before stopping. I don't think this was intentional as she just didn't look too comfortable in the event.

Thanks for all the info from those of you who were there or willing to watch the Flotrack stream! I wasn’t able to find a steeplechase on Sam’s resume and assumed this was her first. Anyone have any other info?
Katie Clute said in an interview that Shalane thought that the 3k distance would be a good event for her because she’s still building up her mileage. She ran a 9:12 indoors and due to her soccer background has the athleticism to be a good steepler. For Sam, I wonder if it’s more about having too many good 1500m runners and just trying to find an event for her to contribute to the team.

While over at the Beach Invite, Mason Strunk set a new PR at 222' 2", surpassing his previous PR from last year's Pac-12s.

Gianna Bullock put up a mere 3-pt PR in the Heptathlon without hitting one individual PR, so lots to improve on for the conference meet.

Back over at Long Beach, Shelby Moran threw a SB 228'8" in the Hammer. She will be throwing the Discus later this evening. Kohana Nakato also threw a Javelin SB with 168'2".
Also, later tonight, Jaida Ross will see if she can establish consistency with some more over 60' throws (and maybe more) with the shot put. She will have some much needed tough competition with the Colo. State indoor national champion.
Matt Erickson ran a slight improvement for a SB 1:47.87 in the 800.
Ella Nelson got her Outdoor season off to a good start with a 2:04.22 in the 800.

Wow Ayyildiz almost stole Elmore's record in the 5k just missing it by a few hundreds of a second. Very nice run for her I figured she could run around 15:20. I honestly believe the 5k is both of their better options on the national stage outdoors. Now everyone can stop saying Oregon Women only have "good milers." Shalane looks like she is trying get bullets from many directions and with the current high school class she has recruited it seems like there will be a solid mile base there with versatility that can be developed to higher distances down the road as well. I also Believe Frias will eventually be able to run good 5k within the next year. The plan could be to get her speed developed this year in the mile and build her up endurance wise over the summer and into the fall.

Silan Ayyildiz (15:15.84) is quickly becoming one of my favorite Ducks, and she did not disappoint tonight. She had the good fortune of getting selected for the #1 heat where she had lots of good competition. Also in her heat was Jenn Randall who is coaching one of my better friends here in Eugene. Normally a 1500 meter runner, Jenn's 14th place was very respectable. finishedresults.trackscoreboard.com/meets/11836/events/37/Final

Stride Reports prediction for today's race at the Bryan Clay Women’s 1500 Meters - Billah Jepkirui (Oklahoma State) - 4:04
- Maddy Elmore (Oregon) - 4:05
- Flomena Asekol (Florida) - 4:07
- Margot Appleton (Virginia) - 4:08
- Klaudia Kazimierska (Oregon) - 4:08
- Silan Ayyildiz (Oregon) - 4:10
I think they are not in tune as much as our own NateB who expressed that Elmore's primary distanfe is the 5k rather than the 1500m
